The Deadly Sister Eliot Schrefer Books Reviews

Why I read this Suspenseful and dark, it sounded like a book that was right up my alley and different from the paranormal YA I have been reading. I also loved the cover, creepy and effective. So when I could, I signed up for it with 1-ARC Tours.

How is the novel driven Character driven, the murder has happened and though there is a lot of action, most of the book is dedicated to what happened and why it happened, the reader never really knowing until the end. The character development is mainly between the two sisters, Abby and Maya. One good sister and one who has gone astray.

My thoughts
A very interesting book, different from a lot of the YA I have read recently. This one is contemporary and suspense. The book starts off with Abby finding a body of a boy who her sister, Maya was known to associate with and had a rather explosive relationship with. Abby immediately thinks her sister killed the boy and is off on a mission to find her sister and protect her as she has protected her for years.

As the book progresses the reader learns more and more about Abby and Maya and why Maya might have commited the crime. The reader is also introduced to some rather colorful characters from the shady side of Maya's life and friends of Abby and their beloved one time step-grandmother.

Mr. Schrefer does an amazing job of weaving the story lines together and guiding you where he wants you to go. Scenes jump back and forth from past to present from what is going on with Abby and then adding Maya in. It was a very effective form of writing as it drew me as a reader in and kept me enthralled until the very end.

This is not for the faint of heart, there is obviously a crime of murder committed, there is drug and alcohol use, and profanity in the book, but like others I have read lately because it is from the shadier side of life, it seems in place and not out of place. The book is a real look at what can happen to a member of a family when they begin to slide away into the dark places that can be found anywhere.

My Rating 4.25/5.0
Gold Star Award Winner!

Abby has always been the perfect older sister. She has protected Maya, been her alibi on countless occasions, and remained positive when everyone else was ready to give up. Now, something has happened, and Abby may not have the power to save her little sister this time.

While out for a late night run, Abby stumbles across the body of Jefferson Andrews, the most popular guy in high school. As she tries to wrap her head around the gruesome scene before her, she notices something familiar sticking out of the mud. It is Maya's phone. Yes, Abby had mentioned that Jefferson was going to be meeting up with some girl named Caitlin, but she was just trying to prepare Maya for the fact that she was simply his latest conquest in a long line of "love em and leave em" relationships.

How could she have predicted that Maya would follow him and ... she can hardly imagine it ... kill him?

From the moment Abby discovers the cell phone, she finds herself in a desperate race to cover for Maya. Her younger sister's life has been off track for years now. Through their parents' divorce and reconciliation, Maya has been causing nothing but trouble. Her multiple piercings, refusal to go to school, experimentation with drugs, and her week-long disappearances have frustrated and worried her parents until they have finally given up.

But now that Maya may be involved in a situation that could jeopardize her freedom and perhaps her life, Abby can't just sit back and do nothing.

What follows is a journey full of enough plot twists and turns to keep readers' heads spinning. Abby is pulled in countless directions as she attempts to protect Maya, please her parents, and persuade the police investigators that her sister is innocent. Is Maya the killer? Could it be the victim's own brother or some other jealous ex-girlfriend?

Author Eliot Schrefer keeps his readers guessing right up to the end. THE DEADLY SISTER is a perfect summer thriller.

I don't even know where to start. This book was really good. I honestly thought I knew who the killer was from the beginning and thought yep this is going to be one of those typical predictable YA novals. Well I was pleasently wrong!!!! The end WOW. This is one of those books that will have you rolling your eyes and internally yelling at the stupid decisions of the characters, but in the end it all makes sense. What a twist. I mean its been 2 days since I finished and I am still like no way. It really had me thinking.

I wasn't at all connected to any of the character, I realized that that was the intent of the author and for this type of read I enjoyed that a lot. It was a somewhat darker read with a creepy ending. Sometimes it may seem to drag on or move slow, but in the end everything will make sense.

I truly did enjoy this and would read it again. I also LOVED the fact that the author kept romance at bay and focused on the mystery and thriller aspect. Because of the great ending I give this a 4.5 stars.

Content
A few mentions of teen having had sex, but very few and no description.
Language is sometimes present, but mildly throughout.
There is a lot of drug use mentioned throughout the book.
I liked the book especially at the end but it seemed like it wouldn't be something you'd expect. Like, it'd be a bit more reasonable if the author put it so there's clues during the boom because at the end it just didn't make sense
This book was good, but not as good as Schrefer's other work. It was still a good book. It keeps you guessing until the end.
