Gone for Good Harlan Coben 9780440236733 Books

I really like Harlan Coben and his books, especially the Myron Bolitar series. But this book is a bit weaker than his other novels. Don't get me wrong, this is still a great read, but it is not as good as the others. I found some of the events not very believable and hard to swallow, but kept on reading anyway. He definitely knows how to weave a storyline! Out of all of his books, this is my least favorite, but it still is above most of the authors that I have read.

Gone for Good Harlan Coben 9780440236733 Books Reviews

Frankly I believe Harlan Coben is one of the best mystery/thriller writers out there.

He doesn't do any of the hero business that you find in the Bourne series, and not much of the technical stuff you find in thrillers such as The Hunt for Red October, etc. While those books are indeed the greatest in their sub-genre, Coben is undeniably the best in the sub-genre of his stand-alone books. And what is his sub-genre?

Coben generally deals in personal loss, family loss, disappearing people, and the whys and wherefores of dramatically altered habits. His books are about real personal loss to the extent that he manages to 'touch' you seriously; he makes you feel the loss in a personal way that is quite unusual, and he stretches your imagination more than most writers.

As with this book, he builds very good reasons for someone's disappearance, or change of habits, etc. But it's not that only; he is a wonderful character builder. He will describe the feelings and emotions of someone, and their affect on their family. Thus he will deposit those thoughts in your mind, ready to hit you with them when you least expect it. Indeed Coben is a master of the unexpected.

The denouements of his books are an incredible pleasure to look forward to; they are so often quite different from one's expectations. And he will reserve his very best surprises for the last two or three pages.

Gone for Good is without doubt one of his very best books. It is mysterious, irritating, sometimes shocking, and finally emotionally heart rending. In the last few pages you will realize how you have misunderstood almost everything in the book, and within those last few paragraphs you will likely find yourself with wondering tears in your eyes.

I thank the powers that be that Harlan Coben is only 52 and probably has several good books left in him.
I’ll be honest...initially, I was unsure if I would like this book. I’d purchased it in error a few months ago, plus it is not a genre I typically go for. I didn’t want my monies spent to be in vain, so I eventually felt obligated to read it. But that feeling quickly disappeared once I found myself hooked on Coben’s simplistic yet profound style of writing. I enjoyed all the many plot twists, and seeing one of the most monstrous of characters turn out to be something of a saint (and in vice versa). Going forward, I’ll be sure to check out more books from him and even the series on Netflix I just discovered, based on one of his books (Safe). I was a skeptic, but Coben made me a believer! 😂
started with one Harlan Coben novel recommended by a friend...and then another, and another. I read some reviews and then decided to read the Myron Bolitar series...every single book, right up to the long awaited newest one, HOME, and I'm so glad I did! DON'T LET GO was superb and I loved that I can still be surprised by the exciting, unexpected twists Coben has as the plot reaches its resolution. Like other reviewers, I'd like to see more of the main character, Will, and hope this might be the beginning of another series. I am going back and looking for any of Coben's books that I might have missed. I have never been disappointed to a Harlan Coben novel and that's saying something! If you love to read, love a good book and have already enjoyed Coben's writing - or If you’re a new, soon-to-be-fan - this book will be a great read!
GONE FOR GOOD is Harlan Coben's ninth successful novel. If it is action you crave this thriller transmits it in spades. As in all Coben novels New Jersey is his venue of choice with short side trips to Albuquerque and Boise. Eleven years ago Ken Kline fled his suburban Newark home after being accused of raping and straggling his neighbor, Julie Miller. Now an international fugitive, Ken is believed by some to be dead. However, three days before his mother dies of cancer, she tells her younger son, Will Kline, that she knows Ken is alive. Will, an assistant director of a home for runaways and his pal, Yogi Squares, the director for the home provide counseling, food and temporary shelter to the children of the night encamped in the darkest and most dangerous parts of Newark. The day of his mother's funeral, Will's girlfriend, Sheila, disappears only to have her finger prints show up at the site of a double murder in Albuquerque. Will, with the help of his well-connected friend, Squares, attempts to find out how these tragedies are tied together. Assistant director of the New York City FBI, Joseph Pistillo, who has a personal grudge against Ken, starts harassing Will believing that he is protecting Ken and knows where he is hiding. Also in the mix is a contract killer, John Asselta, better known as the Ghost, who loves to break fingers and necks for the fun of it. He too is threatening Will to find out the whereabouts of brother, Ken, so he can kill him.
This novel is loaded with surprises on every page. Its snappy dialogue and lifelike characters qualify this suspenseful thriller as a true page turner. The ending is the surprise of all surprises but a bit amateurish, the only weak part of the story. I give this novel a stron
