I am a big fan of Rhys Bowen, having read her A Royal Spyness Mystery novel. I had not read any of the Molly Murphy Mystery, which is why I chose this one. I was not disappointed. I enjoyed the history in the book and the characters. Molly is an adventurous woman ahead of her time and one whom you enjoy getting to know. I will be reading more in this series. This book keeps your interest and I found myself neglecting other duties to read so I could see how Molly deals with the problems in the book.Tags : Murphy's Law: A Molly Murphy Mystery (Molly Murphy Mysteries) [Rhys Bowen] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. From the author of In Farleigh Field... Murphy's Law is the captivating first entry of Rhys Bowen's New York Times bestselling Molly Murphy series Molly Murphy always knew she'd end up in trouble,Rhys Bowen,Murphy's Law: A Molly Murphy Mystery (Molly Murphy Mysteries),Minotaur Books,0312984979,Mystery & Detective - General,Mystery fiction.,Crime & mystery,FICTION Mystery & Detective General,Fiction,Fiction - Mystery Detective,Fiction Mystery & Detective Historical,Fiction-Mystery & Detective,MASS MARKET,Mystery & Detective - Historical,Mystery & Detective Cozy,Mystery & Detective Women Sleuths,MysterySuspense

I had various reasons to read this.
First of all, I had lots of time on my hands due to Chinese New Year and wanted to read something quick and entertaining between some bigger projects.
Then, I have always been reading and watching lots of Irish stuff, such as recently Boardwalk Empire or Hugo Hamilton's memories.
Then, the book's title is suggesting something that the book doesn't quite deliver the link to what is generally known as 'Murphy's Law' is not a strong one. In fact, the book's heroine benefits from some lucky coincidences that are quite the opposite of what the 'law' would suggest.
Finally, a friend had recommended it. In this case, I am not fully with him (while other recommendations from him have worked well for me).
The story a young, self-confident Irish woman in the year 1901 (the 'old queen' has just died, to dancing in the streets of Dublin) tells us how she had to run from home. She manages to get to New York, where a murder on Ellis Island, among her shipmates, causes some problems for her, considering that she is an illegal under false identity. Active person that she is, she takes the initiative and helps the police solving the mystery. In the process she has a romantic entanglement with the police captain and learns all about Tammany corruption. The story has strong phases the humiliations of the Atlantic crossing and Ellis Island, the misery of living conditions in the slums of New York... The mystery itself is rather lame though, and the flirt with the captain classifies the book as chick lit, in my eyes.
Three stars and a half.
I love the author Rhys Bowen's Royal Spyness series and thought I would check out the Molly Murphy books. It did not disappoint. It was excellent and had mystery, action, some romance and wonderful descriptions of the life of Irish immigrants coming to NYC at the turn of the century. It had me sitting on the edge of my seat many times. I would highly recommend this book and have already purchased the next in the series. Buy it, you will not be disappointed.
Molly Murphy comes to America using a false name and accompanied by 2 children that are not her own. The trip over is a nightmare and she has one problem after another to overcome during the voyage and after she arrives - she seems to always be around when there is a murder. Through it all she has grand ideas about how her life will be someday and she never stops fighting to help her new friend and herself be able to start their new lives in America. This is a book that I can't wait to continue reading! A friend told me about the Molly Murphy books and now I'm hooked on them, too!
Murphy's Law is the first book in the Molly Murphy mysteries. It's a historical series set in the early 1900's. It follows Irish immigrant Molly Murphy is on the run, because she killed a man, th e son of an English landowner. She flees to America, under the guise of Kathleen O' Connor, escorting the dying woman's children to America to their father. She mets a horrible man, named O' Malloy, who knows she's not Kathleen O'Connor and later when they're on Elllis Island. O'Malloy is murdered. Later, a friend, Molly meet on the ship is arrested and the young police captain, Daniel Sullivan, believes that he and Molly, (a.k.a. Kathleen) are responsible for the death. After dropping of her charges Molly decides to go after O'Malloy's killer and prove her and Her friend's innocence.
The book is well written and the authors descriptions of the historical settings makes me imagine the carriage filled, gaslight lit streets of New York City, over a century ago. The little details made the story come alive and the protagonist was a realistic, flawed person,a strong female characters.
Molly Murphy is forced on the run after she accidentally kills the son of an Englishman when he attempts a to force his attentions on her. Forced to flee Ireland, she ends up crossing the Atlantic, arriving in New York via Ellis Island, where she becomes a witness in a murder investigation. When she becomes a suspect, she decides to investigate the murder to protect herself.
Set in the early 1900s, the book portrays a New York that consists of enclaves established along ethnic lines, with most immigrants living in poverty as they try to get ahead. The characters in this book are vivid and engaging. The plot is active. With constantly evolving twists and turns. Definitely run to read!
(And no, I am not just prejudiced because my family nickname was Murphy.)
