“Avoiding a Goat Rodeo” will save you time and money the next time you hire a developer to build you a website. More importantly though, it will teach you how to describe what you want to your developer/designer in a way that they can understand so that you get the web site you want, not what they thought you wanted.
“Avoiding a Goat Rodeo” is for anyone who is not a software developer or designer, but needs a web site. (web application) Software development is not black magic. When done right it follows a mostly predictable path. It only seems like magic when you don’t know the path; “Avoiding a Goat Rodeo” shows you the path. It helps non-programmers understand the software development process and the part they play as the vision keeper of their project.

My nephew recommended this book to me when I was talking to him about a web and mobile application project I was beginning. I went to the authors' website and bought the PDF version. Based on what my nephew had told me, I thought it might be a good book to help me plan my project and to recommend to customers and potential customers. The book is excellent. The authors are offering readers very important information about website and web application (or any application) development. Even though I know or have been exposed to much of the information in his book, the authors' practical, down-to-earth presentation has taught (and re-taught) me a great deal and given me a simple, essential, road map for my current project and all future projects. Many things I knew or half knew (or thought I knew), will now be practiced and really known.
Developers, I recommend you read this book and, if possible, insist that your customers read it as a part of any project. If a customer is unwilling to read the book, teach them what is in the book by making the process these two authors define your process!
To anyone who is or will be responsible for a project to create a complex website or a web application, I recommend you read this book and make the process these two authors define your process!
I do weekly volunteer teaching at a Maine prison facility (since the late 90s). Most of my volunteer teaching there focuses on computer technology, primarily database technology. I also offer to help friends and acquaintances learn about technology and databases. I'm currently working with one person at the prison and two other young men who want to learn about technology and databases.
I plan to start using this book as a part of my future volunteer teaching and mentoring. The information is essential. I've purchased the Kindle version and a paperback version.
Technology teachers, I recommend you read this book and see if its valuable point of view, simple, down-to-earth, practical content and language might be a good fit for you and your students too.

Avoiding a Goat Rodeo eBook Cal Evans Kathy Evans Reviews
Cal is a good friend and leader in Nashville's technology community.
Avoiding a Goat Rodeo is essential reading for anyone seeking a website. It helps you understand the language and techniques used in developing a site.
Miscommunication and misunderstandings can easily occur during the process of working with developers and designers. Poor communication ends up costing you in the long run, because the project takes much longer than expected.
Save yourself the money by reading this book. Cal walks you through the steps to make it clear and easy from start to finish.
If you ever want to hire a developer for a web project, do yourself a favor and read this book. I'm serious.
I've been doing web development since 1996 when I was building free websites for my high school friends on AOL and GeoCities. I've worked in a couple corporate environments before starting my own company and have done enough side jobs to know what this book can do for you. Although I don't have the level of experience Cal Evans does, I have enough to understand the value here and I've really enjoyed learning from him.
Too often I hear people say, "I want a website" or "I have an online business idea and need a developer" with no real understanding of what they're asking for. That's similar to someone wanting to start a restaurant without any food or without knowing how to cook. This book will give you everything you need to plan your application, hire the right developer, communicate with them effectively and position your project to be successful.
As I read this book, I constantly found myself saying, "Yes!" and thinking of people who need to read it. Developers need it to understand what is expected of a professional software engineer and entrepreneurs need it or (statistically) their project will either be over budget in time or money or it will never launch in the first place.
I believe the money spent on this book will be the most important money you spend towards the success of your web application.
This book was awesome, and really gave me some insight as a developer on ways I can better help customers. Although this book is geared toward helping non-technical users who need a website or application, there are also bits of info that can help developers be better and understand why customers have difficulty dealing with us sometimes.
Cal and Kathy Evans do a wonderful job of keeping it "down to earth" while still getting the point across with clear examples and/or stories to explain what they mean.
This book will be a recommendation I make to all new customers who approach me asking, "I need a website, how much do you charge?" It will become the best training tool I possess to help customers get the most out of my services.
If you are someone who wants to build a website or application, or if you are a "startup" looking for direction, this book is a MUST READ! After reading, you will be ready. Enjoy.
